Sometimes I wonder if Jesus would be pleased with the way the church teaches in his name. Christianity stresses how Jesus died to save sinners. But that is only a small part of the story. Jesus, himself, said, “I have come that they may have life and life more abundantly.” How often does our theology speak about that?

A garden is often used as a trope for talking about life. A gardener, first, clears away the rocks. That’s like being saved from our sins — necessary, but only the preliminary step. After that comes digging in the soil amendments, cultivating, planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting. A garden is more than rock-free ground, and life means more than sin-free living. (more…)
